The tequila sunrise is all about the pour. Tequila and orange juice go in first, then the grenadine goes in last and sinks to the bottom, building the gradient from deep red to bright orange.

That only works if the grenadine has real body and colour, which is why Barddies Grenadine Syrup, made with real pomegranate sweetness, layers so cleanly.

Ingredients

  • 2 oz (60 ml) tequila
  • 4 oz (120 ml) fresh orange juice
  • ½ oz (15 ml) Barddies Grenadine Syrup
  • Ice
  • Orange wheel and cherry, to garnish

Method

  1. Fill a tall glass with ice. Add the tequila, then the orange juice. Stir gently.
  2. Slowly pour the Barddies Grenadine Syrup down the side of the glass so it sinks to the bottom.
  3. Do not stir after adding the grenadine.
  4. Garnish with an orange wheel and a cherry.

Questions

Why does the grenadine sink?

Grenadine is denser than orange juice, so poured slowly it settles at the bottom and creates the sunrise gradient.

Should I stir a tequila sunrise?

Only before adding the grenadine. Stirring afterwards mixes the layers and loses the effect.
